Final Proposal

For my final project, I would like to create imagery upon an LED screen that obtains values from a alcohol sensor via a microcontroller. This idea came to me once I looked at some of the suggestions for possible electronic element additions that were on the class website. Although this is an art class, I want to create something that demonstrates a technological DIY project that could be useful outside of the classroom or gallery.

I intend for the LED screen to depict different imagery according to the BAC values gathered from the alcohol sensor. For instance, if the value is considered a low BAC the LED screen will depict imagery that is light hearted and/or funny. This will be done by incorporating the LEDs capability to depict green pixels. (Green Means Good). For BAC values that are somewhat questionable, imagery will appear that gives warning while still being light hearted. This will be done by incorporating the LEDs capability to depict yellow pixels. When the BAC levels are over the legal drinking limit (.08% in California), the imagery depicted will be ways to suggest extreme caution. This will be done using the LEDs capability to depict red lights.

One of the artists I will be looking into for inspiration will be Alicia Gibb . According to her website and CV, she is interested in technology, culture, art, and education. Another person I looked into is Lok Wong and some of his colleges. He contributed to the creation of DIY project that allowed the public to interact with model train exhibits. By doing this he wanted to bring attention to the lack of technical infrastructure within public spaces. All of which I feel will be a positive influence for the project I am thinking of.

Some of the things I need to work out are:

1) Interface design/construction
2) Sanitary concerns
3) Communication between the gas sensor and LED display
